For nearly three years of my life, I straightened my hair every day. I woke up early each morning and damaged the hell out of it. Then I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and it started to fall out. I pumped myself full of products and vitamins for a year but nothing brought the hair I used to love back. My self-esteem fell. I couldn’t feel beautiful with this mop of regret and split ends framing my face.

My heart breaks for the people suffering in Xinjiang; people are signing petitions, donating through apps, posting online and spreading awareness while world leaders watch. I can’t exactly go bashing every country on the planet, but this rings too close to the Rwandan Genocide in 1994 that the U.S. failed to help.
